The states of CS2 skins and what they mean

CS2 Skin States - The five states of Counter Strike skins
CS2 Skin States - The five states of Counter Strike skins

In Counter Strike, the skins can have five different states, which are determined by the degree of wear on the weapon. These states are: Brand new, Minimal signs of wear, Field-tested, Worn and Battle scars.

What conditions are available for Counter Strike skins?

First of all, it is of course important to understand what states there are. In Counter Strike there are five different states for the skins, in the following list they are listed from the best to the worst:

  • Factory new
  • Minimal signs of use (Minimal wear)
  • Field-tested
  • Worn (Well-Worn)
  • Battle scars (Battlescared)

The vast majority of skins are available in all five states, and every single skin that a player has in their inventory has exactly one of these states.

An exception are so-called Vanilla skinsThis skin is available for every knife and is effectively the default skin for the respective knife. Logically, the standard weapon skins that every player has in their inventory by default are also excluded from the states.

What does the condition mean for a skin?

Now we come to the crucial point: what does the condition actually say about the skin? The condition determines how worn a skin is, for example how many scratches it has, how much dirt can be seen on the skin or how bright the color is. Brand new is the best condition a skin can be in and battle scars the worst.

That's the whole magic behind the states of the Counter Strike skins, so you can use the state as a rough guide to directly recognize how worn out a particular skin is.

How is the status of a skin determined?

The state is determined by the float value. The exact explanation of the float value is beyond the scope of this article, so we have written a separate article for the float value. You can find it here here.

Roughly summarized, the float is a value between 0 and 1 that is generated for each skin and depending on what the value is, one of the five states is assigned to the skin.

The five states of Counter Strike skins

Before buying a skin, you need to think carefully about what condition you want it to be in. The better the condition, the fewer signs of wear, but the higher the price. Therefore, for most people, a middle ground between price and wear and tear is best.

In the following sections, we will discuss each of the five possible states of Counter Strike skins and explain the individual characteristics of each state.

Factory new

Brand new is the best of the five states. The float of a brand-new skin is between 0 and 0.07. The skin shows virtually no signs of wear because, as the name suggests, it is brand-new from the factory. At the same time, this state is also the most expensive of the five states.

Brand new skins are recommended if you are really sure that you will be playing the skin very often and want it to look its best. Factory skins are usually worthwhile for weapons such as the AK-47 or the M4.

Of course, only if you are willing to spend a little more, if not, a skin with minimal signs of wear might be something for you.

Minimal signs of use (Minimal wear)

Minimal signs of wear is the second best condition for Counter Strike skins. The float here is between 0.07 and 0.15. In this condition, there are often still almost no scratches or other signs of wear to be seen. However, the price is lower than for brand new skins.

Skins with minimal signs of wear are very popular as they often offer better value for money than brand new skins. For the most part, the two conditions are almost indistinguishable visually, but still have a big price difference.

Field-tested

The field-tested state is right in the middle of the five states. The float is in the range between 0.15 and 0.38. A field-tested skin shows slightly more signs of wear, but not too many. The price is therefore also in the middle of the five states.

With many skins in a field-tested condition, there are still very few signs of wear and tear to be seen and those that are present still allow the skin to look very good. Field-tested skins are therefore often the go-to when it comes to inexpensive yet good-looking Counter Strike skins.

Worn (Well-Worn)

Worn is the condition with the second greatest wear. The float is between 0.38 and 0.45. Worn is often considered the least popular condition of all. It shows greater signs of wear, but is usually not quite as cheap as a battle track skin.

However, a worn skin can also have its own charm. If you want a skin that shows signs of use, but where the skin is still reasonably recognizable, a worn skin could be the right choice for you.

Battle scars (Battlescared)

Battle scars is the worst of the five conditions. The float for a skin with battle scars is between 0.45 and 1. This state has large wear marks and is therefore of no interest to most people. However, the prices for battle scars skins are also the lowest.

Some collectors like the worn look of the skins and therefore enjoy the cheap prices. If the float value of a battle track skin is particularly close to 1, the skin can even increase in price again, as it is one of the worst possible and therefore rare skins.
